Jiwaka was formed in 2013 and is the youngest provincial government in Papua New Guinea. The new town called Kurumul was designed to connect all the villages and to act as a town centre. Jiwaka exports large quantities of tea and coffee all over the world. Kurumul will be an important milestone as they expand current export markets. It will also act as a link to the southern highlands and will attract mining companies. A new town centre spanning 180ha was designed and a detailed planning report was approved through the Physical Planning Board. This included undertaking LIDAR surveys over the entire city and setting up a system whereby land ownership can be distinguished, and land tax can be charged.
